Christmas time is here again and it will be gone before we know it.
These last few days, I have been reflecting a lot on how the winter months can often pale in comparison to the summer months. We fill our summer up with adventures and then we hit the cold months and the adventure seems to be gone. But I’ve been realizing that there is still a lot of fun and unique ways to keep the adventure spirit alive during the cold months.
And today, I decided I’d share some ideas and tips for keeping the adventure spirit alive during the holiday season. Just because the weather is colder and doesn’t mean adventures must end, it just means you might need a little more creativity.
Keep the Adventure Spirit Up!
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean the adventuring must come to an end. Granted, in the summer it is a lot easier to get out and go on adventures. But there is a whole plethora of wintertime sports and adventures to try! Whether it’s snowboarding, skiing, sledding, or simply braving the cold and going on a hike. When you have a free weekend, get outside and enjoy God’s beautiful outdoors in the wintertime!
For me, this looked like buying my first pair of snowshoes this year! This was actually quite an impulsive purchase for me because I’ve never really snow-showed before. But This year I want to get out more and explore more in the snow and having my own snowshoes seemed to be the perfect motivation to get me outside more (if you can follow my logic here). So whatever it will look like for you, find the way to get outside and explore more! Cross country skiing is also another way my family has gotten outside and adventured during the winter months!
Adventure”ize” Your Wishlist!
Christmas is just around the corner and maybe you have some friends asking you for gift ideas. Why not ask them for some of that adventure gear you’ve been eyeing. Take your summer planning into your Christmas shopping this year. It’s up to you how high of a price tag you want to make the items on your list. When it comes to adventure gear, price is not always our friend. But I also want to add, don’t be too scared to ask for some of those higher-priced items. Some of my most expensive adventure gear are gifts that I was surprised to find under the tree.
Adventure”izing” your wishlist is the perfect way to let someone bless you by getting you that special item that you will be able to use over and over again on all your adventures.
Support Your Town by Adventuring Local!
The holidays are here and I know there is always the temptation to pull out the computer, log into amazon, and do all of your Christmas shopping at the major store chains. But what about giving your town some love and visiting some of the smaller shops around town. Oftentimes small businesses will come together during the holiday season and put on fun events to sell their wares. Not only can you support small businesses by supporting local, I honestly feel like there is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than taking part in the community Christmas events.
Look around and see what your town is offering. Maybe there is a craft fair at one of the local churches. Or maybe your town has a big tree lighting ceremony or Christmas parade. Maybe supporting local will look like chilling at the local coffee shop with a friend instead of Starbucks. Most of these fun events created by the community are free and they allow you to support your town!
Who knows what kind of adventure you will find! I’m always on the lookout for fun ways to support my town. One really fun way my family got to adventure in our town this year was to visit a really cool light display set up in a garden. I thought it was really amazing that we had this opportunity in our own town! You just might be surprised at what your town has to offer.
Keep Christ at the Center
Lastly, and most importantly, when you go about filling your days with adventures during the Christmas season, don’t forget Christ. It can be so easy during this time of year to fall into the “go-go-g0” mindset. There is always so much pulling at us and keeping us busy. But in our business, we sometimes forget what this season is all about. This season is about Christ coming into this world to save us. This season is about God giving us the greatest gift this world has ever known. During this season and every season, we need to be thanking and praising God for all that He has done for us.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
Where ever you find yourself this Christmas, lift up praise to God and keep Him forefront in your mind. When you are out in creation, praise God for creating such a beautiful world. When you are interacting with people and your community, talk about God and his love. When you are shopping, don’t forget to thank God for the best gift ever given – Christ. Keeping Christ at the center doesn’t have to be hard. As we keep looking at Him, we will find that He transforms our lives to reflect Him.
Your Turn!
Now it’s your turn! The Holiday season is upon us and Christmas is fast approaching. Now is the time to get up and get out! Look around your town and find ways to spice up this season with adventure. Plan that skiing trip you keep dreaming about and bring a friend with you! Take part in your community and support your small businesses while sharing God’s love!
I’d love to hear your thoughts about bringing adventure into the Christmas season. What are some of your favorite ways to keep the adventure spirit alive during the holiday season and winter months? Share your thoughts experiences in the comments!
