There is something beautiful and about a river. So many songs and hymns have been written about rivers. My favorite place to spend my quiet time with God is at a the river. A few days ago I was sitting on a rock and watching as the river rushed by my spot. The river goes from fast moving currents to slow peaceful waters. As I was sitting there It struck me that our christian life can be compared to a river.
When we choose to follow Jesus our life isn’t always going to be calm and quiet. Our life is like the river. Sometimes we get stuck in the current or we get pushed underwater by the strong waves. But we can be assured that just like the rapids, each hardship we face has an end and after each storm in life there is a calm place of rest for us. Also, just like a river, we must not forget that the next trial is just around the bend in the river. We need to once again prepare for the rapids that are coming.
By having quiet times with God each day I can prepare for the swift waters that are coming. I’m learning that whether it’s calm water, or a rushing rapid I find ourselves in, God’s peace is always with me.
God promises that he will never leave us nor forsake us. His peace quiets our soul even when the world around is raging. We don’t have to be in calm waters to experience this peace and it often times is when we are in the middle of dangerous waters that we feel his peace strongest.
The river is a reminder to me of God’s peace. Peace isn’t about living a life that is peaceful and calm, it’s about being anchored in God and trusting that He will protect us. I hear the words of the hymn “It is well with my soul” ringing through my head as I finish my quiet time by the river.
“When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul” Horatio G. Spafford
Whatever part of the river you are in right now, let God be your peace.
